Gender Equality and Care Systems to guarantee Universal Health Coverage

In the context of the International Day of Human Rights, celebrated on December 10 and the International Day for Universal Health Coverage, celebrated on December 12, the Global Alliance for Care, in collaboration with the National Institute of Women of the Government of Mexico (INMUJERES), the Government of France, Women in Global Health, UN Women and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and are convening this multistakeholder virtual panel discussion entitled “The health sector and the recognition of care as a right.” The event will bring together the Global Alliance for Care and the Gender Equal Health and Care Workforce members to outline the practical needs related to the right to health, identify gaps and solutions around the care continuum, and advocate for the recognition of the right to care. It will provide a platform for critical stakeholders to delve into the persistent gender barriers women face in the health sector, including the gender pay gap and their underrepresentation in decision-making positions, and recognize that much of women’s work in health is unpaid. Discussions will inform the broader preparatory work in the lead-up to the High-Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage in September 2023.
